Disaster areas declared for storm damage and flooding in Michigan, Texas and Wisconsin

 

Dear Guaranty Agency Director:

President Clinton recently declared several counties in Texas and Wisconsin to be disaster areas because of storm damage and flooding that began in those states on or about June 21, and he declared three counties in Michigan to be disaster areas because of tornadoes and other violent weather that struck that state on July 2. The Department's interim disaster-related forbearance policies first issued on January 14, 1997 may be applied for the following areas:

Michigan:
Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne.

Texas:
Bandera, Bexar, Burnet, Guadalupe, Kendall, Kerr, Llano, Mason, Medina, Real,Travis, and Uvalde.

Wisconsin:
Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Waukesha, and Washington.

Lenders and guaranty agencies may contact the Department's toll-free number at 1-800-433-7327, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST for further updates. This letter has also been sent to each regional office of the Department, plus the National Council of Higher Education Loan Programs, Inc., the Consumer Bankers Association, and  the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.
